halloween 2013

halloween 2013 was a great one.  the girls are old enough to enjoy all the spooky goodness, but not too old that dressing up isn't cool anymore.  about two months ago i asked them what they wanted to be for halloween.  that might seem like really far in advance, but we live in a tiny town with one small wal-mart (not even a super wal-mart) and if i was going to get four costumes together i was going to need some time to shop online or make a trip to the big city. ;)  i suggested a few themes they could all work with and i think i sold the three oldest on a few of my suggestions.  neely on the other hand was not having any of it.  she wanted to be a ladybug.  again.  for the second year in a row.  and then she somehow convinced all the girls to be ladybug's with her.  not sure how she did it.  i then made them all raise their right hand and take an oath that they would not change their mind.  and if they did, they would wear their pajamas to go trick-or-treating in.  i recorded it on my phone so i could replay it for them when they would start to waver.

i must admit, four identical costumes was pretty darn easy.  we ordered the leggings, tutus (which, in my opinion, is the sole reason why the girls wanted to be ladybugs) ,and leotards, and my mom (aka granny) made the wings.

in the days preceding halloween, kelby requested to ditch her tutu and wings and be a gymnast or to turn her cute ladybug costume into a zombie ladybug.  i reminded her that her wings closely resemble a super-hero cape and then gave her a ton of glow sticks and necklaces to distract her.

kevyn had a pumpkin party at school and her class paraded through the "big school."  their chapel buddies in third grade had special treats for them.  kevyn was especially excited to parade through first grade.  her big sister however did not share the enthusiasm.  kelby's initial response was to give kevyn the stink eye and then completely ignore her.  i moved closer to kelby's desk so i could catch a picture of kevyn parading past her, but kelby made it very clear a picture would not be happening.  geez...

after pizza for dinner, we hit up our old neighborhood for trick-or-treating and then headed back to the girls school for their fall festival.

hope you all had a happy and safe halloween as well!

corn mazin'

mid october kelby's class took a field trip to brazos valley maize.  it was questionable if the trip would actually happen since we had quite a bit of rain the days prior.  the maze was a sloppy mess, but it really just added to the fun (for the kids at least).  i, being the wise one that i am, opted for my rainboots.  i tried talking kelby into wearing hers, but she was insistent that they all had to wear "running" shoes.  i'm sure this was stated so no one would show up in sandals.  many of the kids would run right out of their shoes that got stuck in the mud.  it was really very comical.

our group consisted of four girls and three moms.  i think we were the second group to enter the maze.  do you want to guess where we ranked coming out???  dead last.  like they were about to come looking for us because we had been gone so long.  AND we didn't even come out of the exit.  we got so lost and tired of going in circles that when we could see a clearing through the corn stalks we climbed our way out.  as the three momma's were helping the four girls climb out, we see the cow train (see below) round the corner.  the driver just shook his head at us.  of course it did not help the situation that all seven of us happen to be blonde.  we might have heard a comment or five.  :)

i really love kelby's little group of friends (and their moms!).

fall favorites

If your like me, I love reading other bloggers reviews on items.  And it seems like everyone is doing them…  Friday Favorites, A Few Favorites, Love List, etc.  I feel like I can trust those reviews more than the reviews listed on the various company websites.  I have made several online purchases because of a blogger reviews.  And I love it when bloggers share cool finds.  It’s like social media girl/mom talk.

Now if you are family and only come to see pictures of the kids, sorry.  This post has none.  Check back next week.  :)

What we are loving this fall...

My crockpot!  Seriously, this little piece of equipment saves me.  Most weeknights are rushed between various sports activities and my meetings.  When I can get dinner started before leaving for work or mid-day when I swing by during lunch, our evenings go so much smoother.  I’m constantly “pinning” new crockpot recipes, but two of my faves are Kraft Slow-Cooker Lasagna and Roast Beef.

My girls have been a fan of Uno for some time now.  It is not uncommon for me to find them somewhere tucked away in our house with a deck of cards laid out.  I love that about them!  I thought the Uno phase would wear off (but it hasn’t yet!) so I bought them Skip-Bo.  These two card games, each about $10, have bought this momma several hours of quiet play.  Priceless.

Ok people.  Why didn’t anyone tell me sooner that Carters had some seriously cute kid clothes?!?  Until recently I always associated Carters with baby clothes.  And now I’m sick because most items only go up to a 6X/7 and my girls (who are 5 and almost 7) are about out of that window.  Errr!

Check out some of this cuteness…

I clearly have a thing for grey.  :)

Modern Family
I really can't believe that there are still people out there that haven't watched this show.  It's hilarious.  Like laugh out loud funny.  I love Claire and can relate to her high-strung Type A personality.  Is it weird that I'm typically in a good mood on Wednesday evenings because I know as soon as I get the girls to bed I have this show dvr'd to watch?

Short Hair
Ever since Kelly Ripa walked out with her new even shorter bob I feel like I can’t get to the salon fast enough to chop mine off.  Check out some of the images I pinned

These are a bit longer than Kelly's, but I'm thinking baby steps.  My appointment is set for October 7th!  Wish me luck!  :)

Speaking of hair, have you guys tried this?  I have very fine hair that seems to thinning more and more every day.  I’ve been told my hair loss (now I sound like an old man) is due to stress and hormones.  Which is awesome because what woman wouldn’t stress out even more at the thought of being bald soon.  Doesn’t seem fair.
Back to the powder…  it works!  My hair no longer lays lifelessly on my head.  And the powder gives my hair just enough texture to actually style my hair and it stay.  So far I’m a huge fan!

I’ve had my boots for a few years now and have only been able to wear them on a handful of occasions due to the major drought central Texas is going through.  Well surprisingly we have had quite a few rainy weekends and love that I’ve had my boots to slip on for soccer games.

My girls are still good with their current rain boots, but wouldn’t these be cute…

I know some of my readers solely read my blog for updates on my sister or because they are going through their own journey with cancer.  For you guys I want to share this.

My sister had a PICC line put in early summer.  I immediately had to order her one of these because:
1. I saw Robin Roberts wear one and if my sister is going to have cancer I at least want her to be the stylish girl with cancer and
2. Lines hanging out of a body totally gross me out.  Holly can testify to that.
I ordered her one in plum and received it only two days after placing my order.  She wears it daily and it does a great job of keeping all her lines from flapping around.  Shiver.  I just visualized that.
Arm Band - Plum
And yes I realize this has nothing to do with this fall seeing as how I purchased it this past summer.  But I did want to share.

Blog Series
I've mentioned before that I love the blog life{in}grace.  Last October Edie did a series on hospitality and this October she is doing a series on Less & More.  We are only 4 days in but it is already sooo good.  Click {here} to check her out!

So there ya go!  That’s what we are currently loving.

weekend review

I’ve really stunk at blogging lately…  I hope most of you follow or just check out my instagram feed.  Although I can’t say I’m really good at that either…

My last post was a month and a half ago.  Since then we have celebrated Jeff & Kevyn’s birthdays.  A good wife/mom would probably go back and write up a really awesome post for each of them, but I know these two know how crazy life has been and can hopefully just settle for a shout out in a random blog post.  I love you both so much!  Muah!

My grandfather, who was 97, passed away at the end of August and he too probably deserves his own post.  His funeral was beautiful and I’ve had several people comment to me on how much they enjoyed it.  Odd, I know.  It truly was a celebration of his life.

Immediately following his burial, we headed to our annual family reunion.  I swear my grandfather planned it like this.  He knew everyone would be flying in for the reunion and it would only make sense to combine the two events.  The reunion also probably deserved its own post.  You can view past reunions here and here

I’m a slacker.  I know.

So what’s up with us you ask?  Where do I start???

Soccer.  Natalie & Kelby are again playing soccer (and are on the same team thanks to yours truly!) and Kevyn is also playing this year.  Nat & Kelby have moved up a level and now play with goalies and a lot more rules (that I don’t understand).  I am admittedly a loud cheering momma and all the extra rules really make me self-conscious.  I don’t know if I’m cheering correctly.  I need a rule book or QR guide.

Kevyn now has several games under her belt and seems to be enjoying soccer as well.  Of course, the first game I missed (volunteering at a fundraiser) she kicks her first goal.  Of course.  She ended up kicking two that night.  Talk about wanting to immediately become under achieving member of society and quit all volunteer work.  Just kidding.  Maybe.  She has since scored more goals none of which I've seen.  The problem with both of them playing is that Jeff and I race back and forth between fields because games typically overlap.  Ugh...

This is where I would like to insert pics of the girls in action, but it honestly has been a struggle for me to get any good pictures this season...  I get so into the games I forget about my camera.  I did manage to get this one of Kevyn that I like.

The same week that school started and soccer practices started, cheer lessons also started.  I again managed to get Kelby, Kevyn and Natalie all on the same team.  It’s probably not the best fit for each individual child, but at this age they really don’t know any better.  I really have no idea how we would be doing it if they were on different cheer teams.

The most exciting news that I have to share is about my sister.  She has had a bummer of a summer (you see what I did there).  She was hospitalized twice for an extended stay and came home each time a little weaker than the last.  As if fighting cancer wasn’t enough, she has also had to fight infections as a result of her weak immune system.  She is seriously the strongest person I know.  In early September she started a new med and although we don’t have the clinical data to prove it, we as a family all feel it is working.  Her lymphoma has produced some large tumors in her lungs which causes a cough.  When the tumors shrink, the cough gets better.  When it grows, the cough gets worse.  Currently the cough is better.  Not gone, but better.  Praise the Lord!  Annnd...  all of her counts have stayed within limits that do not require her to receive any transfusions or decrease her dosages.  Amazing!  The plan is to do two cycles of this med (2 months) and then another PET scan.  But before I get any text or emails in another month to question PET scan results, I should also mention that NOTHING goes according to plan with cancer.  That use to really frustrate me, but after some counseling from my sister of all people, I have surrendered to the fact that God has a plan.  And although it might not be the plan we wish, it is the correct one.

Currently she is going to Houston 1-2 times a week and either Darren or myself take her.  Mom, aka Granny, stays behind to be the bus driver of the previously mentioned activities and chef.  I have no idea how other cancer patients who do not have a strong support system do it.  It truly is a team effort with Holly having to bear the brunt of it.

In other, lighter news…  It’s Fall y’all!

The first week of fall has been glorious!  We started to decorate our front porch last weekend.  If you remember, last year we were still not in our house so I just pinned images of fall porches.  Not this year!  Ideally I would like about 10 more pumpkins, but this will have to do for now.

I also need to find a fall wreath.   I really like this one I found on pinterest, but I'm having trouble sourcing it...

Bittersweet---my favorite. Love it for the fall to decorate.

After soccer games Saturday morning, Jeff and I picked up two items we purchased at an estate auction.  The high boy is going to get cleaned up and put in our master bedroom.  We also purchased an industrial maple top table that we plan to use on our back porch.

Sunday was absolutely perfect in my opinion.  After church and the gym, we spent the day at home getting things done around the house. And by “get things done,” I really mean eat more yummy goodness.  Have any of you ever tried the two ingredient pumpkin bread recipe?  You must!  You can thank me later.  J

Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients:

Preheat oven to 350-375 degrees.

Combine cake mix with pumpkin in a large bowl.

Mix thoroughly -- batter will be VERY thick -- and transfer to a baking pan sprayed with nonstick spray; bake in the oven until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Refer to cake-mix box for pan size and approximate bake time. Batter can be made into muffins, a bundt cake, or into a loaf.  I like to sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top before serving.

Added bonus:  it will make your house smell super yummy!

So there ya go!  We’ve caught up AND I shared a recipe!

I hope to have a post up later this week to share a few things our family is loving this fall.
